Varicose Veins
A website by a patient about having, being diagnosed with, and the
treatment
of varicose veins.
Varicose veins are
veins that have become enlarged and twisted. The term commonly refers
to the veins on the leg, although "varicose veins" occur elsewhere.
Veins have leaflet valves to prevent blood from flowing backwards
(retrograde). Leg muscles pump the veins to return blood to the heart.
When veins become enlarged, the leaflets of the valves no longer meet
properly, and the valves don't work. The blood collects in the veins
and they enlarge even more. Varicose veins are common in the
superficial veins of the legs, which are subject to high pressure when
standing.
Sclerotherapy is one
method, along with surgery, radiofrequency and laser ablation, for
treatment of varicose veins and venous malformations. In
Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy, ultrasound is used to visualize the
underlying vein so the physician can deliver and monitor the
injection. Sclerotherapy should be done under ultrasound guidance
after venous abnormalities have been diagnosed with duplex
ultrasound. Sclerotherapy under ultrasound guidance and using
microfoam sclerosants has been shown to be effective in controlling
reflux from the sapheno-femoral and sapheno-popliteal junctions.

Hi. My name is Ray and I have been going through the treatment for
varicose veins for about 3 weeks. My doctor has been injecting something in my veins to
close the vein up so that my body will create new ones (veins). My
varicose veins weren't as bad as some of the other patient's my doctor has
treated. He showed me before and after photos of some pretty messed up
legs and the after shots were pretty good. Nice looking legs!
